This might be because I used the official installer rather than the Determinate Systems one.

$ nix --version
nix (Nix) 2.20.1

My prompt looks the same as always. It doesn't say anything about nix.

I was 3 layers deep in development environments before it occurred to me to read further and try type curl.

Side notes for users not seeing matching output

For readers who have not used the Determinate Nix Installer, they'll probably
need to activate the nix command and flakes, and they may not get the change
in command prompt in entry 3. This is the case if someone is using the official
installer or trying to read through the guide on nixos. Closes DeterminateSystems#315.
