Events Directory | Requirements & Use Cases

If you had the perfect events directory complete and ready, what would you use it for? How often would you refer back to it?

I'd use the Events Directory to find events happening in a particular geographic location that I know I'll be at a point in time.

show me all the events in new york in june

I'd use the Events Directory to identify all the events in my particular topic or technology specialty that I want to participate.

show me all the [python, ruby, javascript, etc.] language events
show me all the [devops, data science, ux, ai] topic events
show me all the [android, ios, ...] platform events

I'd use the Events Directory to identify speaking opportunities that seem strategic for my product.

I'd use the Events Directory to populate my own spreadsheet / air table / smartsheet / notion / etc. with basic demographics about the event as I gather additional details more specific to my use case.

I'd use the Events Directory to find open-ended recurring events to participate, such as meetups that are looking for speakers throughout the year in a specific location.

This would help facilitate the matching problem of speakers and audience... whether I'm a speaker in search of an audience or an organizer in search of a speaker

I'd use the Events Directory to learn about a series of events... ie. annual recurring events that have been running for a decade as different than one-off or first time events being promoted.

I would use the Events Directory to help me prioritize my engagement plan based on a number of criteria:

Reach: number of attendees, size of developer ecosystem, geographic region
Impact: number of topics, notable attendees
Confidence: acceptance rate, talk guidance
Effort: budget required, etc.

I would use the Events Directory to help me with syncing my event list across multiple systems of record to keep alignment among stakeholders:

I love this idea, because I just got back from some events and didn't make it to all the talks but would really like to watch them.

I saw this recently as an aggregation of them by most watched as well which I thought was clever:

In 2017 I created a README file listing several tech events.
Since, the README file grows and since several years it becomes https://developers.events.

I'm working in my free time almost every day since several years and now it becomes a known and useful website with a lot of features.
Most of the features you listed are already implemented.

For now the project have 397 contributors on GitHub and 1.8k stars.
It references 1178 events worldwide (and CFPs) for 2025.

So I would like to know, why not contributing to developers.events with the idea of the perfect events directory project you have? :)

You have 💯 asked the right question. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to try and duplicate effort where other good solutions exist. We absolutely should just contribute directly if it were about identifying events.

When the working group was formed, events aggregation was identified as an area of focus without clarity on the problem to solve. So, part of this discussion is to figure out if there is a problem worth solving and what solution(s) exist and/or gaps there may be.

Most events resources are great at identifying existing events, where and when they exist, and whether or not the CFP is open. For a Developer Advocate looking for speaking opportunities, this is a valuable resource and the effort you and others have put into creating them has helped many.

As a DevRel leader however, I don't have what I need. It's related, but the problems I need to solve from a marketing and sales perspective are not covered. The ability to incorporate event data into my analysis tools, annotate them with both private and public details, etc. is something that I do not have available to me and is manual effort. I think every organization has a similar workflow problem, but it may only impact a small handful of people. (local meetup organizers, community managers, event managers / field marketing, etc.)

I don't think solving those problems is within scope of projects like developers.events and would probably hurt the user experience if it were.

Just to add more clarity and be explicit, this project should not be an attempt to accept individual event submissions. That feels counter-productive to me.
