Stuck loading system hive forever with SATA adapter

I am using a SATA to IDE adapter plugged into a 120GB SATA SSD. When I try booting the pre-installed image (downloaded latest as of today with Freeloader 3.2), Freeloader starts but gets stuck at loading the system hive. I've waited over 10 minutes and it does not get past this.
I tried imaging to the drive with both Rufus and Balena Etcher with the same result.
I unfortunately don't have a USB to IDE adapter to test the original IDE drive.

I can provide additional details if they're needed.

Guess there are still issues with devices that are not standard IDE drives. You could try putting the original drive in, booting into a Linux distro from a USB, and flashing the drive from the command line using dd (I've heard of some people doing that successfully)

I tried a custom install with FAT32 instead of NTFS as per #9 and it also got stuck at the same place.

This is almost definitely an IDE driver issue, not a filesystem issue.
