User comments don't load until sort type is set

Steps to reproduce

1. Go to any user page
2. Switch to "comments" tab
3. See no comments
4. Switch to any sort type other than "new"
5. Suddenly, see comments!

The first time I did this, switching back to sorting by "new" and then refreshing caused an error message to pop up, but that only happened once.

Additionally, this stopped happening at all once I played with it for a bit.
Presumably it saved my user comment sort type and overrode whatever broken value was causing the issue.
