This would also allow the user to choose to use a newer version from the Internet, the version in the same folder as the program, or the version inside the program. Provide these three options as radio buttons or a dropdown in the Options window.

When downloading an update to the XML document, the application will tell the user that any customizations to the online update version will be lost (and give the user an option to stop the update before the process starts) once the update is applied to the one updated from the Internet. Once the updated file is downloaded, it's copied over top of the Internet-updated version in a subfolder.
