What datasets are needed for CMIP7 simulations?

The full set of forcing datasets that CTSM needs for clm6_0 physics for CMIP7 are:

• Surface/Landuse-timeseries Update to CMIP7 LULCC forcings #2851
• DATM forcing Add option for new CMIP7 CRUJRA forcing data for CLM CDEPS#327 (this might NOT need to be updated)
• population density New population dataset for streams files #2701
• CO2 times series CMIP7 CO2 concentrations for I case #3386
• CO2 isotopes C Isotope data for CMIP7 for clm6_0 physics #3346
• lightning data (stick with current)
• urban @olyson will make these with new CMIP7 urban raw data
• Crop: GDD baseline and sowing windows (?)
• Ozone (WACCM?), stream_year_last should go through 2023
• aerosols (WACCM?), stream_year_last should go through 2023
• Nitrogen deposition (WACCM?), stream_year_last should go through 2023

I believe the bottom three are provided by WACCM simulations, so we can ignore those for now. The top three have issues associated with them, so there's some work being done on them. For urban we will stick with the current datasets that do run through 2106.

I'm not sure about crop. Especially for the future scenarios segment. What do people know about that and what needs to be done on the CMIP7 dataset timeline?

@lifang0209 can you let us know about lightning datasets? We can continue to use the current dataset for the historical period. But, would need the future scenarios provided.

Oh, actually I'm wrong. It looks like we just have a historical period currently. So please confirm that we don't need to update that dataset and there won't be future scenarios for lightning provided. Thanks.

We can continue using the current present-day climatological observations dataset for lightning in both historical and future simulations, so there’s no need to update it. So far, no future lightning frequency change datasets are available. When coupling, lightning frequency data could be derived from atmospheric model simulations.

@olyson can you let us know about the urban datasets, especially for the future scenario part of this? It looks like we didn't have different urban streams for each future scenario -- so maybe we can just stick with what we currently have?

Right, similar to CESM2, we don't have separate urbantv_streams developed for the various scenarios. So we will use the current one developed for explicit AC, which runs simyr1849-2106.

@samsrabin what will need to be done for the crop datasets? And what needs to be done for the future scenario part of this?

Maybe I'll rephrase Erik's question to be more specific about sowing date windows. This needs to be updated for CLM6 and CESM3? This isn't dependent on future scenarios, but needs to be created based on historical simulations (in an I case)?
