option to only show the OSD indicator without taking any action

It would be nice to be able in some cases to only display the indicator. Original comment suggested fake, it could also be show with percentage for the progress bar.

You can achieve a decent-looking result with something like swayosd-client --custom-message=" Brightness: ${brightness}%" (provided the missing character is a lightbulb icon from a nerd font)

Of course, you have to provide your own values for the message, e.g., with wl-gammarelay-rs:
