Linux distributions

Linux is an open source operating system similar to Windows and Mac OS. Because it’s open source any developer can update or improve the operating system themselves. Linux is used on cell phones, desktop computers, MP3 players, TVs, web servers and more.

There are several different versions of Linux called distributions designed to target different users. For example Hikarunix Linux was created solely for playing and studying the game of Go. Ubuntu is a version of Linux that was created to replace windows with a user friendly interface.

Below is a a list of a few different distributions of Linux:

  • Edubuntu was designed for primary and secondary education students to use in school.
  • Ubuntu Server was designed to be used as mail\file\web\etc server.
  • Chromium OS is a version of Linux used that is in Chromebooks, Chromeboxes and tablet computers.
  • LinHES was designed for home theater computers with applications for recording TV built into the operating system.
  • Scientific Linux was created for use by various labs and universities around the world.
