Strange drying rack placement logic

Placing a drying rack on a corner will prefer north/south side even if you put it on west/east side, except west (Red arrow means placement direction, black dot is where I was standing):

But if you stand behind the block, the rack will be placed closer to you:

Placing on nothing will always prefer southside:
