@gleckler1 I'm not sure what is the best way to go here, as this data is standard WMO variables measured at 2m. So the existing CMIP6 Variables / CMIP6 DR's don't exactly match, especially with units. I suggested some new names above but I think it might be better to add to the Amon.json these variable_ids:

2m temperature = tmp (degC) CMIP6 = tas (K)
2m temperature (diurnal) = dtr (degC) CMIP6 = N/A
2m temperature min = tmn (degC) CMIP6 = tasmin (K)
2m temperature max tmx (degC) CMIP6 = tasmax (K)
Precipitation rate = pre (mm month-1) CMIP6 = N/A
Vapour pressure = vap (hPa) CMIP6 = N/A
Wet days = wet (days) CMIP6 = N/A
Cloud cover = cld (%) CMIP6 = clt (%) - maybe use clt as they are both the same unit?
Frost days = frs (days per month) CMIP6 = N/A
Potential evapotranspiration = pet (mm day-1) CMIP6 = evspsblpot (kg-1 m-2 s-1)

@Darwyn72 Is this distinct from HadCRU5?
Presumably these are all monthly means. Units differences from CMIP are not a problem - we routinely change them.
Most of these are relevant for model evaluation but I'm unsure about vapour pressure, wet days and cloud cover. Is the cloud_cover a visual surface measurement? Anyhow, we'll be able to move forward with most of these.

@gleckler1 yes this is distinct from HadCRU5. The cloud-cover is a surface measurement like the others from ground-based met stations

@gleckler1 This is not exactly the same dataset, as the one I proposed is 4.09 up to 2024, but otherwise is the same information. You are right, this is already on CEDA archive - I found it here: https://catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/uuid/9cf07e92afaa405da4f40b6733f362d3/
I can't find it on the ANL or ORNL ESGF Metagrid under obs4MIPs, so I would still need to prepare a version. I've started a branch for this, https://github.com/PCMDI/obs4MIPs-cmor-tables/tree/507_PDS_CRUT5/inputs/CRU-UEA
