1. When should we use discussions vs. Slack?

use discussions to keep a record of discussions and decisions that are more permanent than Slack's 3-month window. Users are encouraged to migrate Slack threads to discussions

To convert a Slack thread to a discussion:, click the "⋮", "convert to issue" and then once the issue is created "convert to discussion" in bottom of the right column of the issue.

2. Why not just use issues?

discussions cover a larger scope, including a place to discuss ideas and ask questions
