PowerGrid Action Buttons Bug with Non-Standard Primary Keys

Issue Summary

When using PowerGrid tables with models that have a primary key named anything other than id, action buttons defined in the actions() method disappear from the rendered table. This occurs due to a bug in PowerGrid that triggers a PHP 8.1+ deprecation warning: substr(): Passing null to parameter #1 ($string) of type string is deprecated.

Root Cause

Through systematic testing, I identified that:

1. PowerGrid tables work correctly when the model's primary key is named id
2. When the primary key has a different name (e.g., entity_id), the action buttons disappear
3. The issue reproduces consistently across different models and tables

Reproduction Steps

1. Create a model with a primary key named something other than id (e.g., entity_id)
2. Create a PowerGrid component for this model
3. Define action buttons in the actions() method
4. The buttons will not appear in the rendered table

Verification

I confirmed this by:

1. Starting with a working PowerGrid table using a model with id as primary key
2. Renaming the primary key to entity_id in the database and model
3. Observing that action buttons disappeared and the substr() warning appeared
4. Reverting back to id as the primary key, which fixed the issue

Workarounds

Until this bug is fixed, developers can:

1. Use id as the primary key name in their database tables and models
2. Use the actionsFromView() method instead of actions() to render buttons from a Blade view
3. Suppress deprecation warnings in development (not recommended for production)

Thank you, the issue has been resolved by using id as the primary key (the $primaryKey property), previously it was $primaryKey = models.id;. The substr() warning no longer appears.
