Ok found the solution

VSCode can only run this extension if you have git enabled.

Why? I have no idea.
Why doesn't it tell you in the docs? I have no idea.

Thanks for the report. We rely on the git extension to detect where the git repository root is, so that we can prevent the LSP from restarting if you're in the middle of a rebase or a cherry-pick. That way, if you have conflicts in the Gemfile or lockfile, the LSP won't try to restart and crash.

That said, it's intended to be a soft dependency on the git extension. If you don't have it or don't use git in your project, it should not fail, so this is a bug.

How can I be the only user of ruby-lsp that disabled the VSCode git extension because I use other git clients?

It's possible others use other clients, but just don't disable the extension. This is the first report we received of this crash. Anyway, it's a bug and we should fix it.
