• Browser version & OS: FF140 on Win10
• Steps to Reproduce (STR):
  • Create new profile, start FF, go to any password-based website, login: FF asks to save password.
  • Close FF, put the raw arkenfox user.js in profile folder, start FF, go to the same password-based website, login: FF do not ask to save password.
• Console errors and warnings: None

On a raw profile newly created with no extension, if I go to any website with password-based login, FF prompts me to save the password or not. If I close FF, add arkenfox's user.js (with no change), restart FF, then go to the former website and login: FF no more ask me to save credentials.

I have read the wiki, the issues, and really wondered what was wrong in user.js - or more likely with me...

To avoid misunderstanding, I'm not speaking about FF clearing or not things when shutting down. Here, it's about the popup prompt to save credentials just when we log in a website.

AFAIK, arkenfox doesn't block the prompt to save passwords (from memory it's a notification panel that hangs off the tabstrip?) - e.g. we don't disable the password manager/sql database (touching the disk), etc.

It's been a very long time since I had to add a new password to my main FF (and no other browsers have any), so I would have to test somewhere

Here's 1166947 from FF51 about formless login captures. @git-78 Try flipping that pref in about:config and then loading your login site and retest a login

• please let us know if this works - or point us to the login page you are having an issue with (if you want) - as rusty points out this is likely formless, but we need to now for sure

Meanwhile, I want to leave this open to think about why this pref should be false. The pref only controls prompts to save so why not let users capture them? @rusty-snake what do you think - my one concern is that 0903 is specifically autofillForms .. FORMS so we would have no way to block autofill on formless (needs testing and TBH I can't be bothered)

The pref which controls the prompt itself should be this one:

But it's commented out in user.js, so there must be another one as a kind of master switch ...

re-opening, as I want to revisit this pref - the issue is not capturing the login, but if formless logins autofill

our user.js changes two prefs to do with passwords

user_pref("signon.autofillForms", false);
user_pref("signon.formlessCapture.enabled", false);

open 1427543 make autofillForms false by default

• note: disabling autofillForms doesn't stop the user from clicking in the form and being able to use saved usernames/passwords (creditcards etc?)

if we were to allow formlessCapture (default is to allow), the capture itself is harmless - but what happens with autofill? How can we block formless autofill. Does formless autofill even exist? Obviously the same reasons as for why we want this are the same as for forms
