The DB tools that connect to AWS Athena are not ideal, and VS Code would be a far superior environment to work on. Besides, it integrates with github and S3 already.

I would love a simple integrated interface that could edit and run SQL code against Athena tables.

Describe alternatives you've considered

I tried configuring SQLTools with Athena extensions, but it is still incomplete. I tried to connect with ODBC or JDBC, to no avail (Power BI can do it, but not VS Code)

Would Notebooks make sense for this feature?
We haven't used the API at all, though a SQL query workbench seems like a good fit.

I'm not sure if I understand the bit about the Notebook you linked, but my idea was to replace SQL Workbench/J with VSCode. Workbench/J is not a bad solution, but VSCode is so, so much better.

Notebooks are kind of hard to explain but in summary they combine code + visualization in a single file/editor.

Here's an example of a Python notebook:

I have no clue exactly how it'd all fit together, but we could make a pretty nice integration for SQL queries.

Ah, I see what you mean, I use python notebooks in VSCode, and it works really well. Indeed, I imagined a similar implementation for Athena queries.
I even have a trusty notebook to run queries and charts, but the issue is that we can't tell VSCode to treat the excerpt as SQL inside python, so no syntax correction, and no server logs...
BTW, I must say that I am only a user of VSCode, I have no idea how the extensions are built :-) I even tried looking under the hood of this extension for SQLTools - the guy actually created the Athena driver, but has no documentation and I couldn't get it to work.

I dug into the linked extension and it looked like a bunch of skeleton code unfortunately, which would explain why you were unable to get it to work.

Is the SQLTools extension something you use frequently (or at all)? I'm wondering if we should try to integrate with it as opposed to spinning off our own implementation. We wouldn't have as much control over the experience but we'd also be able to have something working much faster.

Sorry for the long delay in the answer, but I don't use it since I can't query my database in AWS Athena with it - if I could, I would use it instead SQL Workbench/J :-)

Have same request. It will be great if it can be integrated directly in AWS toolkit
