Can I inquiry what is the status of this one? I see there was an attempt at implementing this but it was never merged, is that correct?

No one is currently working on that.

I'd like to take a stab at this, should I try to resume the existing but abandoned feat/language-identification branch, or rather start from scratch?

@jportoles Sure, feel free to create a PR based on branch feat/language-identification. This was the problem back then: #17 (comment)
