"Cars in the city"

This is the subject we're going to focus on the coming weeks. With different kinds of data we are going to make a visualisation with interesting relations between several variables.

I still do not have a very specific topic for my concept. Therefore I'm going to brainstorm a lot about possible ideas. Together with my team, we already made 2 mindmaps about the theme of cars in the city.

The first one is a global scope to generate some different perspectives about the theme De auto in de stad - mindmap algemeen

With the second mindmap we visualize the stakeholders De auto in de stad - mindmap stakeholders

To come up with a good research question, I want to generate as much as possible questions:

  • Oldtimers and environment
  • Is OV the solution to the car problem?
  • Are electric cars really better? After how long are they better?
  • Effect from "milieuzone"
  • Tactieken om de hele dag gratis te parkeren

Visualisation ideas:

  • City travel. Choose a city where you want to go. Then see the most cheapest route. Including travel cost (OV, )

Concepting

I've wrote some different kinds of themes in my notebook also, and I come up with two subjects I want to investigate. There two are:

  • Parking tickets
  • Busy roads during covid

The first one I like the most. So let's see if I can find some data about parking tickets. The things I want to visualize are:

  • Increasement of average ticket prises
  • In which region are the most fines issued
  • In which region are the most expensive fines issued

Looking for data

I was looking for data in the RDW-dataset first.

I did not find something usefull, so I was searching in CBR:

Some other resources I was trying to find some data:

Finally I asked the "data-inzichtel" channel if anyone have seen some data on this subject, but Laurens reacted that it is maybe a subject that is too private. Because I can't find any data, I also think it's not public data and I can not work with it. Now I'm going to do some research about the 2nd subject:

Some resources I found when looking for data: Many sites refer towards the Nationaal Dataportaal Wegverkeer but I can't find very good data myself.

Usefull resources:

  • An amazing visualisation of live-data is wegbeeld. It's very easy to see where it is busy or not on the road.
  • Busy roads in Noord-Brabant. They also get their data from NDW.

I'm going to look for interesting variables in the given RDW-dataset to find some relations between them. Maybe I will come up with a concept faster

This page will partly be in Dutch because my client is a newspaper from The Netherlands. I will have my final assessment in Dutch and therefore I need to have Dutch research questions.

  • Concepting
    • Invalshoeken bedenken
      • Mindmap miro board
    • Onderzoeksvragen noteren
    • Onderzoeksvraag uitkiezen
    • Deelvragen opstellen
    • Feedback vragen
    • Schetsen en uitdenken visualisatie
      • Hoeveel grafieken zijn er nodig?

Interesting questions:

To genereta questions about the subject, I wrote as much as possible questions so I can later filter on the strength of the question.

  • Oldtimers and environment
  • Is OV the solution to the car problem?
  • Electric cars really better?
  • Effect from "milieuzone"
  • Tactieken om de hele dag gratis te parkeren

Data inzichten

Volkskrant Pitch

The day of the pitch, I decided to make a digital sketch of my ideas of my concept. I've put them in a short presentation which you can follow here.

I began with referring to 'destadgroeit.nl' where you can see the upcoming buildings that are build in Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands. I was very inspired by this visualisation because it is so clear to see what is happening while the time moves foreword. It inspired me to make a
