Questions about deployment

Hi,

I enjoy working with Aspire and have a few deployment-related questions.

• Is there a plan to implement an azd-like workflow in the aspire CLI? Specifically, generating Bicep templates, putting them in source control, and then provisioning/deploying them.
• The reason I'm asking is that I prepared a satisfactory workflow with azd and source-controlled biceps, but I couldn't make it work in an azure pipeline. I reported some issues, but I didn't receive any answers.
  • Can provision and deploy Aspire app to ACA from localhost; cannot from an Azure Pipeline Azure/azure-dev#5886
  • Consumption workload - 1/2 Pending:InitImagePullBackOff on legion | 1/2 Running microsoft/azure-container-apps#1577
  • The sample repo, including the pipeline, is available here: https://github.com/mic-hnk/AspireSample/blob/main/.azdo/pipelines/azure-dev.yml. The azd job is unable to create healthy ACA revisions, and I don't know why.
• Does aspire deploy -o whatever work for you? I don't get any artifacts (I tried this in versions 9.5.0 and 9.5.2).

Maybe. By the next version we'll have a more complete model for definining deployment pipelines. Out of the box using bicep on disk and deploying them isn't the model we want but should be possible to do with what we are building. Generally the idea of checking in the assets is a fine one but they should be treated as readonly since (which azd doesn't do today).

Those specific issues look like azure container apps specific. Unclear if there's a deployment problem with azd. I'll see if I can get someone from ACA to help.

We updated the docs to explain what the differences are between publish and deploy https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/aspire/deployment/overview. We'll be updating this again in the next version because there are some significant changes underway.

I read this before but failed to grasp the idea. I might have also been fooled by the cli help and expected some artifacts for the deploy command too.
