Adafruit KB2040 Arduiino Compiler error : "conflicting declaration"

Hi,

With the Arduino IDE I'm getting a "conflicting declaration" compiler error for : enable_interrupts()

I'm working with the following:
Windows 10
Arduino IDE 2.3.6
KB2040 : www.adafruit.com/product/5302
KB2040 Learn Guide : learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-kb2040
WiFi Breakout : www.adafruit.com/product/2999
WiFi Learn Guide : learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-atwinc1500-wifi-module-breakout/wiring-and-test

The KB2040 Learn Guide says that the RP2040 board support is by Earle Philhower:

The rp2040 version is 4.5.2

In the Arduino IDE I installed the WiFi101 library.

The example code that I am using is : CheckWifi101Firmware

It is complaining about seeing two definitions for : enable_interrupt()

The first definition is in nmasic.h

• c:\WFF\Projects-KB2040\libraries\WiFi101\src/driver/source/nmasic.h

• sint8 enable_interrupts(void);

It is returning a signed, 8 bit integer with a value from -127 to +127.

It is located in the "libraries" folder which was created when I installed WiFi101. Apparently the install process places the "libraries" folder in the Arduino IDE "sketch book folder".

nmasic.h is related to the WiFi101 library.

The enable_interrupt() code is in this file:

Question: Do Atmel and Raspberry PI have to agree on a definition or is there something I can do?

Looks like it's up to you, but it shouldn't be too bad.

The SDK exports enable_interrupts which enables interrupts on the Pico. The Atmel enable_interrupts seems to be doing something to the WiFi chip. So they're fundamentally different and it's actually a good thing the prototypes conflicted. Replacing one with the other would kill the core and WiFi for sure. You could theoretically rename all instances of enable_interrupts in the WIFI101 library to wifi_enable_interrupts (or use things like namespaces).

But, actually, the good news is that there is no need for that library at all. The core already supports the WINC1500 with a built-in driver. You need to set some defines in your Arduino boards.local.txt file, but once that's done it works just like all the other WiFi and wired Ethernet devices. See File->Examples->lwip_WINC1500->WiFiClient-WINC sketch which lists the required definitions.

I am now working with : WiFiClient-WINC

I found the boards.txt file in this folder:

And created boards.local.txt in that same folder. It contains:

The first part of that line rpipico needs to match your board definition or the IDE won't use that option. So for the KB2040 it would be adafruit_kb2040.build.extra_flags=...

Adding the following got ride of the compiler error:

Regarding your comment at the beginning:

When I started this discussion I said that it was Adafruit's Learn Guide that said to install WiFi101.

Question: Should I have the Adafruit folks review this Github discussion and update their Learn Guide to not install Wifi101 ?

I think they weren't expecting anyone with a powerful controller to use it. It offloads tons of things to the board which is great for the Arduino AVR and 30MHz ARM boards. For the RP2040 or Teensy-type boards that's not necessary.

I suppose they can either a) fix the library source so it works (but won't be compatible with the networking stack here and will need their own WebServer, MDNS, etc. implementations) or b) add a comment for this RP2040 core they should just set those values and use the built-in examples. The RP2040_MBED core from Arduino won't work like that, though, so those users will need to stick with the WiFi101 lib.
