Investigate Client synchronisation issue

Description

Currently the code enabling the network update thread is commented out. Did some digging around and found out there is a deadlock for example when running integration tests and other scenarios. Have investigated the issue locally but will add the work in a branch related to this issue.

Steps to reproduce

Enable network update thread.

Additional context

Was discovered while implementing #930 and decided to migrate the work to a separate issue.
