Traces produced using `STACKED` and `JOURNALED` updater modes diverge

As noted in this issue, using JOURNALED world updater mode results in incorrect traces. This needs to be investigated and resolved in order to allow replacing StackedUpdater by JournaledUpdater.

I suppose there should be some documentation and tests for the properties the updater is assumed to satisfy. Now JournaledUpdater seems to be breaking some of them but we are discovering that only indirectly.
