The target's player entity seems to be covering it up. Maybe hiding the target to the controller can "fix" it?

If Paper provides an API, hiding the target to the controller would be fine.

Right, we already use hidePlayer to hide the controller. Not sure why this wasn't done on the target too.

I think we don't hide the target because it wouldn't look like you're actually controlling them. Perhaps we could show an action bar message or similar to the controller while the target is being controlled.
