Multi-Agent Step Race Benchmark: Assessing LLM Collaboration and Deception Under Pressure

A three-player “step-race” that challenges LLMs to engage in public conversation before picking a move (1, 3, or 5 steps). Whenever two or more players choose the same number, all colliding players fail to advance. The first LLM to reach or surpass 16–24 steps wins outright, or if multiple cross simultaneously, the highest total steps takes it (ties share victory).

This design moves beyond static Q&A. Winning requires live social reasoning: reading opponents, offering half-truths, gauging trust, deciding when to cooperate, and knowing when to lie. Over thousands of matches we see patterns emerge: large frontier models charm first, then knife their partners late, many agents overplay the maximal 5, causing long jams that punish impatience. A few discover subtle linguistic tells—echoed phrasings, timing shifts—that reveal an opponent’s plan a turn early.

The dataset opens fresh questions. Can we predict a model’s next move from its last sentence? Which phrases cloak a bluff? Do temporary alliances ever stick? How fast does an agent abandon a losing script?

We generate a frame-by-frame and a summary replay of each game, illustrating:

  1. Conversation sub-rounds with highlighted quotes
  2. Secret moves (1,3,5) and collisions
  3. Real-time positions on the track
  4. A dynamic scoreboard (TrueSkill ratings, partial-win tallies)

The animation reveals how LLMs strategize, stall, sabotage, or cooperate, culminating in final rankings. It shows how their talk translates into secret moves on the board.

A heatmap where rows and columns are models. Each cell shows how often the row model beats (or ties) the column model in shared games. Redder cells mean the row typically outperforms the column.

A vertical bar chart of how often each model’s chosen steps overlap with another’s in the same turn, causing a stall. Higher rates hint at riskier strategies or unsuccessful coordination.

Method Summary

  1. Players & Setup

    • 3 LLMs per game.
    • Each sees the latest truncated conversation (much older sub-rounds are dropped).
    • Silent baselines reveal how much conversation (or the absence thereof) influences outcomes.
  2. Conversation Phase

    • Up to 3–6 sub-rounds of public dialogue. Any LLM can speak or use <stop> to remain silent.
    • Conversation ends early if everyone picks <stop>.
    • Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Exp and Qwen QwQ produce long chain-of-thought responses. We pass these through DeepSeek-V3 to remove meta-commentary and keep only the final, concise text. This ensures clean, game-focused transcripts.
    • For lengthy matches, older conversation is truncated to keep prompts within token limits, so models rely mostly on recent remarks for decision-making. The moves themselves are not truncated.
  3. Move Phase

    • All players simultaneously pick 1, 3, or 5 steps.
    • If ≥2 players pick the same number, those players collide and do not move.
    • Positions update; if any cross the finish line, the game ends.
  4. Scoring & TrueSkill

    • If multiple LLMs cross the finish line simultaneously, they share a “partial win,” and TrueSkill interprets them as tied. Those below the threshold are ranked lower. After each game, the winners’ rating groups move up slightly, while the losers shift down.
    • Results feed into a TrueSkill system that updates each model’s μ ± σ rating, plus a “PvP Matrix” for pairwise partial-win rates.

Silent Strategy Overview

  • Silent Random Picks a move uniformly at random from {1, 3, 5} and always ends conversations immediately

  • Silent Greedy Ignores game context and always selects move 5 while remaining mute in conversation

  • Silent EVMax Tracks opponents’ move frequencies with per‑round exponential decay, estimates each move’s chance of uniqueness, and plays the move with the highest expected value. When within five steps of the goal, it tries the safest finishing move before falling back to an EV calculation, breaking ties based on whether it is trailing or leading

  • Silent UCB Treats each move size as an arm in a UCB1 bandit: after every round it updates wins and rewards for unique moves, computes UCB scores, and chooses the arm with the best confidence‑adjusted value. Near the finish line it instead selects the closing move with the highest success probability

  • Silent Collision Tracker Blends two estimates—decayed opponent move frequencies (Dirichlet prior) and personal success history (Beta posterior)—to judge how “crowded” each move is. It picks the move with the best blended success probability, optionally via Thompson sampling, and applies special logic to close out games safely

  • Silent Closer Uses exponentially decayed global move counts to estimate uniqueness. Depending on whether it is leading or trailing, it adjusts a safety threshold and, when within five steps of victory, chooses the smallest move that meets that threshold; otherwise it picks the move with the highest expected value, breaking ties deterministically by hashed order

  • Silent Blocker Decays move frequencies, estimates uniqueness via Bayesian counts, and favors blocking a leading opponent who is within five steps of the goal by predicting and matching their finishing move. When no block or safe finish is available, it selects the move with the highest expected value, using Thompson sampling to resolve near ties

To complement the leaderboards and charts, we have compiled a set of model-specific narrative summaries that document how each language model actually behaves at the table—its negotiation style, risk preferences, bluff patterns, and typical failure modes. Each dossier is a concise, stand-alone document that follows a fixed scaffold covering tone, strategic DNA, signature plays, strengths, weaknesses, social habits, and end-game evolution. They are available in the model_summary_results directory.

GPT-5 (medium reasoning) shows up as the rules lawyer with a badge: commanding, clipped, math‑first. It drafts rotations, names “safe” lanes, and welds deterrents to them. Persuasion is data‑logic plus teeth—threats like “Any 5 gets mirrored” land because he often proves them once. Social stance: natural table‑captain, low‑sycophancy, “fairness” as scaffolding, not a destination.

Strategic Spine

  • Phase 1: Architect. Codifies rotation/commit‑reveal, binds with mirror‑punish norms, and audits “dominated” deviations.
  • Phase 2: Enforcer. Poisons a number (usually 5) and herds others into 1/3 splits or mutual stalls he harvests.

He typically begins benevolent—designs fairness, notarizes punishments, and earns obedience. Midgame he turns sheriff, proving one deterrent and letting rivals’ fear print his steps. At the brink, he either:

About TrueSkill

We employ Microsoft’s TrueSkill rating system (paper and official info) to track each model’s skill as it competes in multi-LLM step-race games. Unlike traditional Elo, TrueSkill can handle multiple participants in the same match, assigning relative skill rankings more flexibly. We run five randomized passes through the entire match list, re-updating TrueSkill from scratch each pass. Then we aggregate each model’s final rating as the median over these five passes. Animation uses a single pass. We use:

  • sigma = 8.3333
  • beta = 4.1667
  • tau = 0.0
  • draw_probability = 0.1
