In macOS, directores with extensions do have special meanings. For example, /Applications/Google Chrome.app, /System/Library/System.framework

I also just ran into this bug today, since many emacs projects end with .el, e.g. auto-package-update.el and these projects cloned onto my machine appear in LSD as single files.
