Check roles or if the user is banned after logging in

My API returns the user with their roles and whether they are banned. On the front end, I want to validate if certain roles are allowed or if the user is not banned to grant them access to the app. I've already tried doing this in middleware, logging the user out with logout(), but it still allows access, and then I have to press F5 to log them out. Any ideas?
