The MathWorks Excellence in Innovation program provides a list of challenging projects with industry relevance centered around technology trends. Motivation for educators and students might be:
- Compelling projects based on industry needs
- Gaining skills and experience on industry relevant problems
- MathWorks endorsements and gadgets
Although the program has been created to target educators and students, in particular to provide a list of projects that can be used as capstone projects for senior design classes or as master or PhD theses, anyone, including industry professionals, can work on these projects if they wish.
Select a project you want to work on and fill out this form using the project number that is at the top and at the bottom of the project description page (if you want to select more projects at the same time, please fill out one form for each project). You will then receive a confirmation email with more information and a summary of the data you entered in the form. You will be given an deadline (four months from the signup date) but this is not a strict deadline, just let us know if you need more time. We use the deadline to check if there is still interest in pursuing the project after the four month time has passed, in case we have not heard from you earlier.
If you have already registered your intent to complete one of the projects (via this link), follow the steps below for completing your project and become eligible for the rewards:
- Create a GitHub repository and select the open source BSD 2-Clause or MIT license to share your solution publicly.
- Upload your MATLAB and/or Simulink solution into your repository. We suggest to complete this first steps as you start working on your project to ease collaboration with your team mates (if any) and for version control.
- Let us know here that your solution is ready for evaluation by including a link to the repository. Make sure you use the same email address when you first registered.
If you submit your solution following these steps, we will review it and if the project requirements are satisfied you will receive the rewards as outlined below and when you registered.

- Certificate of completion
- Endorsement for positions at MathWorks (internship, full time, student ambassador)
- LinkedIn recommendation
- MathWorks T-shirts
To provide help as you work on the project, we have created the discussion forum to allow you to ask any questions and/or share any ideas or doubts. MathWorks engineers will do their best to respond promptly. You can also use the discussion board to seek for collaborators. Each project has a dedicated discussion forum that can be accessed from the project description page directly. Please do not hesitate to use the forum to ask any questions!
