• use subtype as a template argument.

Your exceptations are correct and it works.

You just cannot use instantiate and subtype on the same instantiation in the same package. For example, this should work:

struct Data<T>
{
    T value;
};

instantiate Data<bool> Inner;
instantiate Data<Inner> Outer;
