Closes #520

PR checklist

  • Removed parameter use_gpu. Setting --profile gpu is adequate for activating the GPU-based pathways
  • If you've fixed a bug or added code that should be tested, add tests!

Let's merge #534 and then update this one to confirm that the GPU failure on Singularity does go away.
