Open-Source All Video Content #5622

Description

This ticket is a request to change the license of all video content on the official Nym YouTube channel (and other published websites, if existing) to be licensed under an open-source copyleft license, such as CC BY-SA

Why?

Starting last year, Google begin rate-limiting shared IP addresses. This change made all YouTube video content unavailable to many at-risk users, who protect themselves by using shared IP addresses on the Tor network, VPNs, and Nym. And users at large companies, universities, mesh-networks, etc.

It is therefore not possible for users who currently use VPNs and Tor to be able to learn about Nym via your video content on YouTube.

By releasing it under an open license, it liberates others to be able to redistribute your videos onto other platforms (eg PeerTube) which do not block users using VPNs and Tor.

How?

3 things should be done:

  1. Change your YouTube channel's default settings to set the license to "Creative Commons - Attribution"

Go to YouTube Studio -> Settings -> Default Upload Settings -> Advanced Settings -> License

  1. Update all existing YouTube videos license to "Creative Commons - Attribution"

  2. Update the video description of all existing (and future) videos to explicitly state the desired license with the text:

Video licensed under CC BY-SA
