usethis fails to upgrade

I'm using R version 4.5.1 on Ubuntu 22.04, and RStudio 2025.05.0 build 496, when I requested the packages update, the following list of packages that could not be updated appeared: evaluate, later, usethis, xfun. I deleted all those packages and tried to use Rmarkdown, it didn't work because it needs devtools and it uses usethis. When I check the update date of usethis, it tells me it was released on 2025-08-28. The result is that Rmarkdown that I used until 2025-08-27 now doesn't work.

It's impossible to say without seeing exact error messages. But usethis just got released, so chances are it's related to CRAN mirrors being slightly out of sync with each other. I.e. RStudio sees there's a new usethis version, but your default repository doesn't have it yet? So you can either take charge of which repository you're installing from or, mostly likely, just wait a couple of hours.
