Questions with DAW, VSTs and Audio Drivers for musicians

Hey David, and other helpers.

Can you give some suggestions for amateur musicians like me that want to use sandboxie as a perfect portable media for DAWs and VSTs?

Questions

1. APP Templates for DAWs? Like Ableton Live, FL Studio, Reaper, Waveform, LMMS etc.
2. Should I put DAWs in sandbox 1 and VST Plugins in sandbox 2 If I should, will my DAWs in sb1 be able to access VST Plugins in sb2 ?
3. Should I install ASIO Drivers inside or outside sandboxie? Can DAWs visit ASIO Drivers in my host Win system?

For example, I use FlexASIO Driver, some people will use ASIO4ALL Driver
Maybe hardware ASIO too.

4. What logs or samples should we provide for support?

1. I don't think sandboxie provides ready made templates for DAWs.
2. It’s better to keep the DAW and its VSTs in the same sandbox, as sandboxie doesn’t share registry or file data across sandboxes by default.
3. Install it on the host, the sandboxed app can access host system drivers by default.
4. You can provide both sandboxie logs and your DAW logs.

Thx edions. In my last night attempt, I got following additional reference info for musicians:

1. If you use Xfer OTT, do NOT put DAW together with OTT, or you may face a issue like:

   Closing OTT window will crash/close the whole DAW ! (Both Reaper and FL Studio tested)

2. Host installed DAW can access Sandboxie installed VSTs, and Xfer OTT inside Sandboxie won't crash Host DAW

   I dont really know the bad side of this installation, maybe registry issue?

3. Host FlexASIO driver works perfectly, Host Hardware specified ASIO Driver not tested(Latency unknown if you install DAW inside sandbox).

Honestly, I was thinking install both DAW & VST inside one sandbox, so i can easily reinstall Host OS or change to a new computer without reinstall all my DAW & VST.

But there's still some bugs and crashes not solved yet.

New Questions

1. How to provide and verify a template for sandboxie?
2. Host DAW accesses Sandboxie VSTs, if this VST requires activation, which registry will the activation info stored?
3. By doing 2.Host DAW ..., VSTs seem to run outside sandboxie, will there be any problem with registry issue?( Not the activation issue, I can accept activation info stored in Host registry cause I'm using genuine VSTs and DAW)

I wish David can solve this Portable DAW & VST question, musicians that dont have a standalone computer can use this portable DAW & VST to migrate to a new computer easily. And they won't have to worry about system reset issue, this is a big torture for us to reinstall all DAW & VSTs.

And even if you have, you can still use sandboxie in case your musicPC crashes or you want to use a new computer.

If it's on the host machine and loads VSTs stored inside sandboxie, registry writes may end up going to the host machine's registry. This likely has to do with the working directory.

I’m not entirely sure about this, but if you later run the same VST inside sandboxie, it could see different registry entries and might appear "unactivated." There’s also a risk of registry conflicts.

Yes, Once install DAW on Host and VSTs on Sandboxie, Sandboxie Reginfo will be BYPASSED.

I've tried VMware too, the latency will drive you crazy. It's not only about latency, but audio performance when using ASIO drivers, I mean the sound glitch...
So I think the best option for portable DAW might be using linux with kvm and install Windows as Guest OS. This might solve ASIO driver performance and I/O latency both for disk drive and for midi/PC keyboard.
