No more wayland since 7.72

• I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.

Overall summary

Signal Desktop is not launched in wayland native since 7.72, revert back to 7.71 make wayland work again

Steps to reproduce

1. Open signal-desktop 7.72.1
2. swaymsg -t get_tree show that signal is launch in XWayland despite ELECTRON_OZONE_PLATFORM_HINT=wayland

Expected result

run in wayland native

ran in Xwayland

This mentions that users should switch to XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland instead, but running

env XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland signal-desktop

still starts Signal Desktop in xwayland

Fix is in this PR: electron/electron#48301

The fix has landed in Electron 38.2.0: https://github.com/electron/electron/releases/tag/v38.2.0

TL;DR:
Wait for Signal Desktop to update to Electron >=38.2.0. In the meantime, the issue can be mitigated with --ozone-platform=wayland.

Latest Signal-Beta on Arch shows empty window when setting this option. I had to install that Beta because after upgrading to last Arch package 77.2.1 Signal simply stopped working at all. Displayed nothing, no errors were logged either. The Beta package from AUR at least starts with xwayland.

The only relevant message I see is this:

Installed 7.74.0beta1-1 this morning - same thing, empty window on Wayland. It seems that this beta version now uses Wayland as default, unlike 7.73 beta.
Works OK if launched as signal-desktop-beta --ozone-platform=x11

See this too for 7.73 and 7.74-beta. Have to run
signal-desktop --disable-gpu since signal-desktop --ozone-platform=x11 has the known Xwayland scaling issues.

It seems that v7.73 fixed this (OP issue) and that forcing wayland is not required anymore (I guess $XDG_SESSION_TYPE is now properly processed).

Edit: as mentioned by @2-4601, upgraded Electron has been picked up in latest Signal-desktop release (cf 011943f)
